Furukawa's directorial debut was in 2011 on the [*Kunihiko Ikuhara*](https://anilist.co/staff/100082/Kunihiko-Ikuhara)-led [Mawaru Penguindrum](https://anilist.co/anime/10721/Mawaru-Penguindrum/) where by the end of the project he was co-storyboarding every episode. As a director he absorbed many 'Ikuni school' aesthetic flourishes such as recurring visual motifs with different nuance and stage direction, and infused his own action animator background into his storyboards.
